For all those people who are new to WordPress and are writing for some site or their blog which has WordPress as its CMS. This guide will help you out with all the basics and a few more fancy stuff.
Introduction:
First of all, is the WordPress login page. Always make sure your password is a strong one as a mean of security measure. Well once you are logged in you can see the main page. Over here for your main interest is the Post tab. Click that and you will see 2 options.
* Edit
* Add New
The Edit option allows you to Edit previous published posts, or drafts if you have any. The Add New option as its name implies, lets you publish new posts. Our main interest is in the Add New option so let us get over there!
Add New Page:
Once you open the page, you will a number of tabs all around the page. The first and foremost is the "Add New Post" heading.
This is where you write your content and do all the editing in. There are 2 ways of doing this. Either you use the HTML view or the Visual view. As for new users, I would recommend Visual view, since it's more of a WYSIWYG view. The HTML view is good for people with a bit of basic knowledge of HTML. Though do remember, the HTML view combined with the Visual view can achieve perfection beyond words.
At the side of the "Add New Post" you see the -> Publish tab. Here you can Save the draft, so that you can edit it later on. Or publish the post, so that the masses of people can view it.
#1 Rule of Thumb: A frequent saver is a good WordPress gamer.
This means, that always save your draft every once 5-15 minutes. It reduces the loss if something happens, like a power-outage or anything else, that closes the WordPress tab.
Below the content box, you see an Excerpt box. Any detail you put here is shown on the front page. This is for quick summary of your post.
# Hint: Make a catchy one, and catch the attention of your readers and peers.
Then comes the Send Trackback, Custom Fields and Discussion tab. These are not very important so we will leave them for this post. However, below this is the Open Air Custom Settings (not in all WordPress). Over here, if you put an Image URL in the Image URL box, that will make for the thumbnail at the main page. Putting a video will put a video inside the content.
Then at last comes the "All in One SEO Pack". SEO is the Search Engine stuff, so whatever you put here is visible on search engine searches, e.g. Google, Yahoo, Bing!.
The BOX of features!:
Right, so there are many features over here. The main ones in the Visual Mode are:
* Font Settings (Bold, Italic, Strikethrough)
* Alignment
* Link
Clicking the Kitchen sink, opens up more advanced options such as.
* Format
* Underline
* Insert Media
* Insert custom characters
* Indent
* Undo and
* Help
The HTML view has "less" features but since you rely heavily on HTML coding, the features are not required to be there anyways. The features that the HTML view has are:
* Font Settings (Bold and Italic)
* Link
* Quote
* Insert Image
* Code Open and Close Tag
* Lookup
How to put Images/Videos:
This is really an easy task in WordPress, unless you got some 500 pictures or maybe something. I can prove that its good enough until 100 pictures. But above it, can get a little hectic!.
Alright there are 2 ways of putting in media. Let us look over the HTML way first.
Upload an Image in the "Add New" section, under the Media tab. Once done, copy the image direct link. There is only 1 link so relax. Anyways, you need the direct link (if you are copying from somewhere else, e.g.: Imageshack)
* The HTML WAY:
Once you copy the image link, open the HTML view area, and at look at the 7th button which says: img. Clicking that will open a small pop up. Paste the link there and click ok. If you want to give it a description, give it 1 or forget it.
# Common Mistake: People sometimes remove the ->
. Well if you put your image without the http before it, your image will not appear.
* The VISUAL WAY:
The Visual way is a bit more time taking than the HTML one. Anyways, there are 3 ways of doing it in the Visual Mode. Open the Visual mode and click the Add an Image, or Add Media button right above the content box (below the heading). Once there, you can either Upload it directly, upload it from a URL (like the HTML) or choose the image from your Media Library. The Media Library is the place where your images are stored once you upload them.
Once you upload the image, it will give u many options like alignment and all. So if you want to do all those, do them or just forget them.
Resizing Images:
One way is to just click the image, and then drag the small dots around it to scale it. Use the top and bottom side ones for a constant scale. Another way is to click the image, and you will 2 icons pop up right on the image. 1 is an image and the other is a delete. Click the Image Icon. Once you do a pop up box will come and you can reduce the % of its Image size, or go to Advance Settings and do the settings yourself.
If you have anything you want to ask, let me know and I will add it to this post. Happy Word-pressing my brothers and sisters!. Hope this helps.
